I am a bona fide night owl. As much as I try to be a morning person, it’s just not happening. For some reason, I’m more alert and productive at night. Mornings can get a little chaotic when I’m rushing to be out the door at a certain time. Here are 3 tips that have helped me start the day positive and stress free.
1. Give yourself time to wake up
I used to set my morning alarm as late as possible to get in more sleep. Sure I’d give myself enough time to get ready, but I’d end up late anyway. Being the brainiac that I am, I finally learned to factor in more time to wake up as well.
For me, that means lounging in my bed for an extra 30 minutes, reading the news on my phone. For you, that might mean meditating, listening to music, or watching the sun rise. Whatever it is, be sure to note how long you need to wake up before you can start getting ready. Don’t forget to schedule time to eat breakfast as well. The trade off for sacrificing a bit of sleep is a much calmer morning.
2. Simply your morning routine
Have everything ready so you’re not scrambling to do things at the last minute. Pick out your outfit the night before, taking into account the weather. Declutter your bathroom counter by displaying only the things you use. Have your lunch ready to go, and your bag already packed with everything you need for the day. Put out the pots or pans needed to make your breakfast.
If you’re a coffee drinker, using a K-Cup is admittedly the quickest and most convenient way to make a cup of coffee. However, coffee pods are non-recyclable. Even the inventor regrets creating them. An estimated 10 billion plastic K-Cups went in landfills in 2015.
Luckily, Vancouver company Ethical Bean Coffee created 100% compostable single serve coffee pods as a solution to plastic waste. You can put the entire pod in the green bin after use and it will completely break down in a municipal composter in less than 84 days. Not only that, the coffee is 100% Fair-trade certified and organic. I tried the Classic Medium Roast and Lush Medium Dark Roast, and both are absolutely delicious. A certified B Corporation, Ethical Bean Coffee continues to be a leader in sustainable solutions. Look out for their eco-friendly coffee pods at your local retailer in Canada and the US soon.
3. Eat a Healthy Breakfast
Breakfast is fuel for the day. Instead of sugary cereals or buttery croissants, opt for wholesome and nutritious options.
Breakfast is the biggest meal of my day. I’m on a workout diet, so I consume plenty of protein and good carbs. For my protein, I usually eat organic eggs, scrambled. For my carbs, either oatmeal or a baked sweet potato. Sometime I eat a piece of fruit as well. A hearty breakfast gives me energy and helps reduce snacking later on in the day.
