6 Albums I Listen to on Winter Walks in Canada

Every winter, as soon as I don the depressing uniform of a puffy down jacket and snow boots, listening to music when I have to be outside is no longer a fun option but a requirement. My headphones double as earmuffs, and music distracts me from the cold.

As the cold kicks up again here in Toronto, I'm noticing a pattern with my winter music selection: it's soothing, reflective, slightly melancholic. Here are the albums I play on my winter walks.

Oasis (What's the Story) Morning Glory

A classic. Particularly wintery songs for me: "Don't Look Back in Anger," "Wonderwall," and "Champagne Supernova." Almost makes me look forward to walking in -20°C weather.

Beach House Teen Dream

Don't be deceived by the name of the band. When I listen to this album, I'm in a (metaphorical) winter cabin. I can't even tell you which song is called what because the whole album is one long (teen) dreamy song for me.

Dierks Bentley Black

Dierks Bentley is the first non pop crossover country artist I really got into. Yes, the theme is heartbreak, and references to whiskey and pickup trucks are in there somewhere, but the sardonic humour, counterbalancing the maturity and sincerity in the songs, set this album apart for me. Faves: "Black," "Pick Up," "Roses And A Time Machine," "Different For Girls," "Light It Up" - okay, so basically the whole album.

Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky The Nutcracker

Fuck yeah Tchaikovsky. The OG hitmaker. Every song is lush and dreamy. The only thing better than listening to this album is watching the crazy ballet and listening to an orchestra play these suites live.

Sky Ferreira Night Time, My Time

If you're ever in a sultry but dreary mood, this is the album for you. The poutiest tracks are "24 Hours," "I Blame Myself," and "Nobody Asked Me (If I Was Okay)."

Surfer Blood 1000 Palms

The electric guitar has never sounded so epically somber than on this record. Stand out tracks: "I Can't Explain," "Point of No Return," and "NW Passage." The band also has a "summer" album, Astro Coast, their killer debut.
