Green Beauty: 7 Nontoxic Products I’m Using This Summer

Less is more for me when it comes to beauty products in the summer. Makeup doesn’t like to stay on my face, and layering skincare products as I usually do can feel heavy.

That said, I still managed to try some new stuff that will likely stay in my summer beauty routine. I’ve included some old faves as well.

1. Kjaer Weis Lipstick in “Love”

The KW lipstick in “Love” is a coral shade that really brightens my complexion. I’m sure it would work well for most skin tones.

Remember in 2014 when My Love From Another Star was the hottest K-drama and everyone wanted Cheon Song-yi’s coral lipstick? The YSL Rouge Pure lipstick in “52” was said to be her shade. Well, this Kjaer Weis shade is a great dupe and a nontoxic alternative. I usually apply lip balm first and then smudge this on with my ring finger.

I love Kjaer Weis lipstick formulas. The organic ingredients are good for you, and the lipsticks don’t taste or smell funny after a while either. The tube is refillable, making their products more sustainable than other brands.

2. Alima Pure Natural Lip Tint

The Alima Pure lip tints are the types you can swipe on without a mirror. I usually throw one of these in my purse. The shades I use for the summer are “Peony” and “Daisy,” although they look like the same color in the tube and on my lips. I suppose “Daisy” is a teensy bit brighter?

Anyway, they’re both a light fuschia colour that adds more brightness to my natural lip colour. The formula is not overly glossy, so the colour lasts.

3. Ursa Major Fortifying Face Balm

I ran out of moisturizer when I was in Boston, so I dropped by Follain, a clean beauty store, to try something new. The salesperson recommended the Fortifying Face Balm by Ursa Major when I asked for a lightweight moisturizer.

Loaded with naturally-derived ingredients, this thin, serum-like moisturizer is calming, acne-clearing, and nourishing without clogging pores. I bought the travel size version, but I like it so much, I just ordered the full size from Well.ca (a Canadian site).

4. Ursa Major 4-in-1 Tonic

I also picked up the 4-in-1 Face Tonic from Ursa Major in the travel size at Follain. So the four benefits of this tonic are: cleanser, exfoliator, soothing after-shave, and ultra-light moisturizer. It’s supposed to be acne-clearing and detoxifying.

I want to use it more after going to the gym. The small size is in a spray bottle, which is perfect for that, but the full size doesn’t seem to be. I might have to purchase the full size later and refill the travel bottle.

5. Supergoop! Setting Mist SPF 50

I use the Supergoop! Defense Refresh Setting Mist SPF 50 as my daily sunscreen. It’s not a mineral sunscreen, but it has no parabens, synthetic fragrance, or oxybenzone, so it’s cleaner than other chemical sunscreens. It’s supposed to be water and sweat resistant, and you can use it over makeup if you need to.

I usually don’t spray this directly onto my face to avoid inhaling the chemicals, so in the morning, I spray it into one palm first and pat it onto my skin with my fingers. I have both the full size and the travel size, which is great on the go. I usually have it in my purse and I will spray directly onto my body when needed.

6. Supergoop! Invincible Setting Powder SPF 45

I just bought this Supergoop! Invincible Setting Powder SPF 45 and it’s a great 100% mineral powder sunscreen. It’s sweat resistant, and it doesn’t leave me shiny. I use it when I want my skin to be more matte, because it’s so easy to look shiny in the summer.

I don’t usually like loose mineral powders because it’s so messy to apply, but the built-in brush makes this easy to use and portable. The brush is refillable. Just unscrew the bottom container to swap in the refill.

This comes in the shades Light, Medium, and Deep if you want some coverage, but I got Translucent because I simply plan to use this as a sunscreen. However, I might just try the Light shade when I run out.

7. Sailor Jellyfish Hair Gel

Who knew I needed hair gel in my life? The Sailor Jellyfish Hair Gel is plant-based and it helps tame my frizz and define waves. A little goes a long way, it’s not sticky or goopy. I like using it because it does make my hair a little wavier.

The product has a noticeable herbal smell, probably from the fir needle. I actually like it, but it goes away after you put it on.
