At the end of my recent post, How I Stay Healthy‚ÄĒMind, Body, and Soul, I’d mentioned that I now know I can’t go wrong in life if I always listen to my intuition. I thought I’d expand on intuition here, define what it is and my simple way of tapping into it.
What is intuition?
Gut feeling, instincts, inner voice, inner wisdom, sixth sense, “spidey senses,” or whatever you want to call it, it’s a gift that we can all access.¬†The dictionary definition of intuition is “the ability to understand something immediately, without the need for conscious reasoning.”
Allowing yourself to be guided by the invisible can go against what we’re taught on reason. I actually consider myself a very logical person, but I’ve come to realize that I use intuition all the time without even knowing it. The intuitive knowledge comes to me first, but I may use logic immediately after to verify my decision so I feel comfortable proceeding.
Sometimes we make a decision because it “feels right.” But is personal agenda the driving force behind that decision? Is¬†it really intuition, or is it a reactionary decision based on fear, stress, ego, or wanting to please someone else?
Earlier this year, I was at a crossroads. I was making plans to do one thing based on logic and what I thought were my own desires, but the more I went down this path, the more frazzled I felt. I didn’t know whether the nerves were due to excitement, or if I were stressed and unhappy.
So I decided to sit down and really listen to what my soul wanted.
One Simple Way I Tap into My Intuition
I sit in a quiet space, close my eyes, and breathe to calm down.
I put my right hand on my heart and feel into my heart energy.
I ask myself the question, and “Is this what I really want?”
And I listen for the answer.
Usually, I will get a clear answer. Sometimes, I will get a “not right now.” Other times,¬†I may not get an answer, which means either I’m not ready for it yet, or I have to wait to let the situation unfold a little more before checking in again and making a decision.
In the dilemma I just mentioned, my soul gave me the answer right away, which was that I needed to take the less glamorous path, a path I was unfamiliar with. When I came to that realization, I immediately felt calmer. Although I knew I would be going out of my comfort zone, I felt more at peace with this decision because I knew it was the right one for me and I would be supported by the universe.
I don’t believe it’s necessary to meditate for hours to tap into intuition. You can if you want to, but I don’t. Taking a moment to really connect and listen is enough.¬†Allow your intuition to grow. Like a muscle, the more you use it, the stronger it gets.
